Don't forget the protective pads and dollies when renting a moving truck. The dollies are necessary for moving the big items, unless you want to risk a hernia, and the pads are ideal for protecting furniture. Both are relatively inexpensive additions.

When you're purchasing extra insurance for your rental truck, be sure to get everything in writing, and make certain of the basics. At the very least, be sure you understand what's covered, the size of the deductible, and whether the coverage extends to other states.

If you're moving in the summer, during a long holiday, or at the beginning or end of a month, be sure to rent your truck or trailer well in advance. Those are the peak periods for moving rental companies, and it might be difficult to get something at short notice.
